SECURITY / President Buhari Sympathises With Niger Republic Over Militant Attack by adex84: 11:50 pm On January 03, 2021
President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed his sympathy over the terror attack on the Niger Republic by militants around Zaroumdareye, a border between Niger and Mali which claimed the lives of seventy people.

President Mohammadu expressed his sympathy through a statement signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mallam Shehu Garba titled, "President Buhari sympathizes with the Niger Republic over the terrorist attack that killed 70 people, calls for united action against terrorism."

The President said, "I am profoundly shocked by the large scale death of innocent people at the hands of these callous militants who have no regard for the sanctity of human life.

"We are facing grave security challenges on account of the evil campaign of indiscriminate violence by terrorists in the Sahel, and only united action can help us defeat these vicious enemies of humanity.

"Terrorism has now become like a contagion of evil that can spread anytime if united action is not taken."

The President added, "Instability in one part of Africa had implications for the security of others.

"The destabilization of Libya in 2011 is producing domino effects on other African countries' security, including Nigeria, Niger, Chad, Cameroon, and others.

"The looting of Libyan armories in the aftermath of Gaddafi's fall has put dangerous weapons into the hands of terrorists and other criminals who now pose security challenges to other countries.

"We are united by common fate and therefore we must act in concert to defeat these evil men who target innocent people.

"Let me use this opportunity to express my deepest sympathy for the government, the people of Niger and the families of the victims."

HEALTH / Re: COVID-19: God Spared Me To “Serve Him and humanity more and more”- Obasanjo by adex84: 10:18 pm On January 02, 2021
Yes, we need to thank God for preserving our lives.

HEALTH / COVID-19: God Spared Me To “Serve Him and humanity more and more”- Obasanjo by adex84: 10:17 pm On January 02, 2021
Ex-President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo has urged people who survived COVID-19 to give thanks to God for sparing their lives.

Obasanjo said this at the Second Annual Thanksgiving Service organized by the Christian Association of Nigeria, Ogun State chapter on Saturday at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta.

Obasanjo who praised God for his life said, he was spared by God to overcome COVID-19 and its turbulence last year because God wants him to “serve Him and humanity more and more”.

He said, “We must give thanks to God. You will be the most ungrateful person if you do not perform the duty of giving thanks to God.

“In all circumstances, give thanks. Therefore, if you fail to give thanks, you are failing a very significant duty of yours as a Christian.

“Last year 2020 was a very challenging year not only for us in Nigeria, not only for us in Africa but for the whole world.

“The fact that you are alive calls for giving thanks to God. It doesn’t matter which way you look at it, that those who you know as a result of Covid-19 are no more here with us. It is not because you are better than they are, more knowledgeable than they are, it’s just by the grace of God.

“And if God gives you that grace, to remain on earth, maybe for a purpose, I believe part of the purpose is for you to continue to serve humanity and to serve God. You cannot be a servant of God if you cannot give thanks to him.

“The purpose of being here is to perform our duty as Christians by giving thanks to God," Punch quoted him to have said.

SECURITY / Re: Police Refuse Sowore's Bail Request - Falana by adex84: 9:54 pm On January 02, 2021
hmmm, Nigeria, a country with no respect for human rights.

SECURITY / Police Refuse Sowore's Bail Request - Falana by adex84: 9:53 pm On January 02, 2021
Mr. Femi Falana, the Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) has said that police refused the bail application of his client, Omoyele Sowore.

Falana said his client has given him go-ahead to sue all the police officers who were involved in the brutality and torture given him.

According to the PUNCH, Falana said, "Since Mr. Sowore’s fundamental right to dignity has been recklessly violated by the police, we have his instructions to press for charges against all the officers who subjected him to physical and mental torture in contravention of the letter and spirit of the provisions of the Anti-Torture Act of 2017.

"Sowore, who was covering an event at the time of his arrest, has maintained that he did not breach any of the COVID-19 regulations. He has been detained indefinitely based on order ‘from above.’”

Falana also accused the police of locking his client in detention with some seemed robbers.

Falana added, “The police officers who arrested Mr. Omoyele Sowore in Abuja on January 31, 2020, subjected him to severe beating and left him with bruises all over his body. As if that was not enough, he has been locked up amid armed robbery suspects at a notorious detention facility called abattoir, maintained by the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad in Abuja.

“The physical torture of Mr. Sowore was prolonged by the refusal of the police to provide him with medical attention. Although Mr. Sowore’s injuries are being treated by his physician, the police authorities have refused the application of the detainee for bail even though the alleged offense of breaching COVID-19 regulations is ‘bailable.’"
