Education / Why schools will not resume on June 8 – FG by Oyeniyi825: today at 4:16 am
Why schools will not resume on June 8 – FG

The Federal Government says it can not open schools until it is sure “our children can go to school and return safely without taking COVID-19 home”. The Minister of State Education, Mr. Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, said this on Wednesday in Abuja at the 36th joint national briefing of the taskforce. sectionalising classes

The minister, who denied the reports that the PTF said schools would reopen in the country on June 8, said the government could not afford to take any costly risk, especially as it regards the safety of pupils and students in the country.

“Until we are sure these children can go to school, return safely and not bring up with them COVID-19 and infect people who are more susceptible than they are, then we are running a huge risk and God forbid, in our hurry, something happens to our children, I am not sure how anybody will be able to retrieve what has been lost.” He appealed to private owners of schools to co-operate with the government in ensuring a safe reopening. “We are going to publish a specification on what we expect COVID-19 or post-COVID-19 reopening to look like. “We are not talking about coping with COVID-19 but in spite of COVID-19, we expect that we will adapt. “For a country that has over 115,000 primary schools, you will understand that 35,000 of these who are private must agree to set up the same standard in other to allow children to go in.” He added:

“The material that the chairman of the PTF spoke about, which is an announcement purportedly from him, that we’re reopening all schools on the 8th June did not emanate from us. “We are going to prepare as much as possible within the guidance that they offer us with their expertise, working in conjunction with the WHO before we reopen schools.” Planned structure for school reopening

The minister explained that the plan for the reopening of the schools will be staggered. “For tertiary institutions, when people hear that the University of Ibadan had Zoom meeting, we sanctioned it. “You can’t say because they are closed that because students are not in school, they can’t hold council meetings. READ: Private schools owners seek FG’s loan, stimulus package “That is legitimately their work and that is within the ambit of what the government thinks all its workers should be doing – the same way we do Zoom meetings or online meetings,” he said. “We also believe that those who work in universities and other institutions should use this period to either upgrade skills, take on new courses, find out what they need to do to make their teaching and learning more impactful and use this period and let it not go to waste. “So, we know that the universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, all their apparatus of governance must be functioning; there is no gap on those ones,” the minister added. For secondary schools, the minister said: “We want to bring in our JSS children and SSS first.

“They conclude their exams, vacate the place, use as much of the space as possible and then others can return. “We will do the same thing with public schools where we will now limit the number of children per class. “What this may mean also is that we may have classes in the morning, and then have classes in the afternoon. “So, whichever is convenient for you, you will now be divided.” Sanitation booth for students According to the minister, the Institute of Chemical Technology in Zaria informed the Ministry of Science and Technology that it was able to produce chemicals “with which we can bring two-metre booths, standardised by NASENI in the ministry of science and technology and allowed to be produced by companies that will be licensed by the ministry of trade and investment.”

He added that it will be available everywhere in the country in almost 200,000 location so that people can walk into a school and disinfect on their way going in and be disinfected on their way coming out. He added: “So that even if they got anything inside, they don’t leave with it. “Those are the kinds of plans we are looking at on a broader national picture. “But like I said, this would be synthesised. “It is a forewarning to private and state governments that the only conditions for which we’re going to be reopening anywhere are that these places become ready to receive students and bring them home safely.”

Crime / How bandits killed 70 in Sokoto villages after Tambuwal’s visit by Oyeniyi825: today at 3:24 am
How bandits killed 70 in Sokoto villages after Tambuwal’s visit

At least 70 villagers were killed when bandits attacked five communities of Sabon Birni local government area of Sokoto state. The villages were attacked a day after Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal paid a condolence visit to the area, following the killing of fourteen people, including the village head of Gajt community on Eid-ul-fitr day. The villages attacked in the recent attack include Garki, Dan Aduwa, Kuzari, Katuma and Masawa. A source told Daily Trust that about 40 heavily armed attackers stormed the villages on motorcycles at about 3:00pm and started shooting sporadically which lasted for hours.

The source which pleaded anonymity said “As of now that I am talking to you, most of the villagers fled the area for fear of another attack because the attackers have changed their pattern – in the past, they only kill our animals or cart them away but now they kill people too”. They kill whoever they see “After the attack, the villagers started looking for their relatives. As of now, 70 bodies were found; 26 in Garki village, 13 in Dan Aduwa, 20 in Masawa, 8 in Karina and 3 in Kazari village. “Some people have gone to the bush to check for their relatives and up to now they are yet to return. We are not even talking about those who sustained injuries because they are many. “There are people who were shot while many got fractures and dislocation while trying to escape the attack.

“The attackers also killed many people on their way to the village. They killed whoever they see on the road,” the source added. Shocked Tambuwal Sokoto state governor, Aminu Tambuwal in a condolence message Thursday confirmed the attack, stating that many citizens were killed by bandits. He did not state the number involved. The governor expressed shock over the killings. “This development is most discomforting considering the fact that myself and the entire security architecture of the state had on Tuesday visited the area and had fruitful discussions with the traditional leaders and other stakeholders on how to nip these unfortunate incidents in the bud,” he stated. “Nonetheless, under my watch, no stone will be left unturned in ensuring that the perpetrators of this dastardly act are brought to book.”

Tambuwal said the state government was working closely with the federal government and the security apparatus in the state to find more ways and means to halt the attacks. “As we work concertedly to tackle this problem, I commiserate and console, once again, the resilient and peace-loving people of Sabon Birni and environs,” he stated. “These losses of lives and destruction of property is not yours alone but that of the entire people of the state.” He craved their indulgence of the affected communities to remain patient and continue to cooperate with the government to tackle the menace.

World-News / Fire guts crowded Cameroon prison in Douala by Israel : today at 12:00 am
A fire tore through an overcrowded maximum-security prison in Cameroon’s port city of Douala on Thursday leading to the hospitalisation of three prisoners with serious burns, a local fire chief said.

Firefighters, backed up by the Police, were able to contain the blaze and stop it spreading beyond New Bell jail, which sits in a densely populated neighbourhood of the commercial capital, close to the central market.

“The operation was made more difficult by the layout and a large number of inmates,’’ fire brigade chief, Kadrey Abdiel, said.

Human rights groups say Cameroon’s prisons suffer from chronic overcrowding, poor sanitation conditions and disease while cases of violence and torture are frequent.

New Bell was built in the 1930s for 800 inmates, but held around 2,500 as of 2011, according to Amnesty International.

Three severely burned prisoners were evacuated, while two firefighters were injured, Abdiel said.

Crowds of onlookers had gathered outside the prison, where a large plume of dark smoke billowed from the roof.

A few inmates had tried to climb over the prison’s walls, but the Police around the perimeter stopped them escaping, regional Governor, Samuel Ivaha Diboua, told journalists.

World-News / Trump fails to shut down Twitter but opens social media to law suits by Israel : yesterday at 11:58 pm
U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday signed his executive order on the social media platforms.

But he didn’t follow through his threat to shut Twitter.

However, he accused the social media platform of anti-conservative bias, which to him, is one of the greatest threats to free speech in American history.

His executive order is intended to begin tackling what he claims is censorship of conservative voices.

“The order could open Twitter, Facebook and Google up to lawsuits by diluting the legal protection which stops them from being liable for posts on their platforms, and which also allows them to moderate content”, the Daily Mail reported..

Trump descended on social media after Twitter slapped two of the President’s tweets on mail-in- ballots with a ‘fact check’ on Tuesday.

The U.S. President hit back by saying he would regulate and even shut down the Silicon Valley giants if they are shown to be biased.

He accused Twitter of becoming an ‘editor with a point of view’ and not a ‘neutral platform’ by fact-checking him and then slammed one of its executives, Yoel Roth, its head of user integrity, accusing him of ‘fraud’ for the fact check. Twitter says he was not involved in it.

Asked if he wanted to get rid of Twitter he said: ‘If it was legal, if it was able to be legally shut down, I would.’

Trump signed the executive order on ‘fairness’ as his attorney-general Bill Barr looked on.

‘We’re here today to defend free speech from one of the greatest dangers it has faced in American history, frankly, and you know what’s going on as well as anybody.

“It’s not good,’ Trump said before inking the order.

“‘A small handful of powerful social media monopolies controls a vast portion of all public and private communication in the United States and we know what they are, we don’t have to name them, we’re going to give you a complete listing.’

‘They’ve had unchecked power to censure, restrict, edit, shape, hide, alter virtually any form of communication between private citizens or large public audiences,’ he said.

Trump also tried to use the power of federal purse strings as pressure, saying we ‘are not going in any social media company that repress[es] free speech.’

He said the government spends ‘billions of dollars on giving them money’ and called the firms ‘rich enough,’ although independent accounts put the total government ad spending far lower.

‘We’re going to be doing none of it or very little of it,’ Trump said.

Asked if he would consider simply deleting his Twitter account given his concerns, Trump said he would ‘do that in a heartbeat’ if we had a ‘fair press’ in the U.S.

Governors of Kaduna Nasir El-Rufai has lauded the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, for his selfless service to Nigeria, as he marked his 55th birthday.

A statement by management of the ministry said the birthday was marked by a Zoom conference anchored by a former Director-General of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dakuku Peterside on Wednesday.

El-Rufai praised Amaechi for his great personality which according to him, made President Muhammadu Buhari love him in spite of all oppositions against him.

According to him, Amaechi is the first Minister in Nigeria history to hold the position of the Minister of Transportation twice and is able to achieve so much within the period due to his unique qualities of inclusiveness.

“President Buhari loves Amaechi like a son, he trusts him absolutely which is why in spite of all opposition, many attempts to put Amaechi in a bad light, he twice selected him to lead his campaign and also as the Minister of Transportation.

“Amaechi’s key leadership quality is his sense of inclusion, he likes to bring everyone on board, he loves teamwork, he empowers people to put in their best, he doesn’t pretend to know it all or try to do everything.

“He is one of the few politicians from the Niger Delta that is Pan Nigeria.

“I think in the history of Nigeria there hasn’t been any Minister of Transportation that has been able to achieve the landmark Amaechi has achieved in very difficult circumstances.

“I am very proud of you, am very proud to be associated with you, I am a beneficiary of your friendship, your love, and your generosity.

“You have helped me a lot in my campaign, you have raised money for me, you have given me ideas on how to be a better politician and I have learned a lot from you.

“I am confident that if and when Nigeria is looking for a leader that will take us to a higher level, you will be up there on the frontline among those that will be counted,” El-Rufai said.

The zoom birthday conference had several distinguished personalities including musicians and comedians to light up the day.

He reassured Nigerians that his administration is determined to protect them from the killers who he described as psychopathic without human sympathy.
Meanwhile, Ibrahim Gobir, the senator representing Sokoto east senatorial district, has alleged that residents of Sokoto state now rely on soldiers of Niger Republic to defend them from the attacks of bandits.
The senator told the Senate on Tuesday, May 19, that the Nigerian Army was no longer capable of saving his people from bandits.

Gobir made the statement when he contributed to a motion on insecurity during plenary. He said the Nigerian Army fails to respond whenever the people call them for help.
Still on security, the Defence Headquarters has disclosed that Boko Haram terrorists in the Sambisa Forest of Borno have been set in disarray, following massive air strikes conducted by the Air Task Force of Operation Lafiya Dole (OPLD) on Friday, May 15.

He added that the reports revealed that the terrorists were importing additional fighters as well as increasing their logistics stocks preparatory to launching attacks on troops’ locations and surrounding civilian settlements.
According to him, the air taskforce dispatched an enhanced force package of attack aircraft and a surveillance platform to engage the location.
In another report, the Air Component of ‘Operation Hadarin Daji’ has eliminated 27 bandits and destroyed some of their dwellings, along the Nahuta-Doumborou Corridor on the border between Katsina and Zamfara states.

Sports / Premier League football set to return 17 June by Israel : yesterday at 11:45 pm
The Premier League is set to return on Wednesday 17 June, with Aston Villa hosting Sheffield United and Manchester City at home to Arsenal, according to a report.

The 2019/2020 campaign was brought to a screeching halt back in March due to the COVID-19 outbreak, while ‘Project Restart’ has been ramped up in recent days with clubs approving a return to full contact training on Wednesday.

Throughout the crisis, Premier League sides has kept in dialogue and at their most recent meeting on Thursday a consensus over the exact return date of top flight English football appears to have been reached.

As reported by the Telegraph, action will resume on 17 June with City vs Arsenal the headline act.

Villa will also take on Chris Wilder’s side in a game that could have significant implications at the bottom of the table.

The season should then be completed by 1 August with the FA Cup final scheduled to take place one week later. These dates line up with UEFA’s plans to have the Champions League sewn up by the start of September.

As well as agreeing a resumption date, clubs also discussed the contentious issue of where games will be staged.

Meanwhile, the police have told the Premier League that they are happy for the majority of matches to be played at their original venues – though some ‘high-profile’ fixtures could be moved to neutral grounds (via Daily Mail).

Concerns have previously been raised over the possibility of fans congregating outside empty stadiums – breaking social distancing protocol in the process. The mayor of Liverpool caused controversy when he suggested that Reds supporters would be likely to do this if Jurgen Klopp’s side secured the club’s maiden Premier League title.

Despite these concerns, the police are content for the vast majority matches to be played at their original venues with only ‘high-profile’ games being considered for neutral venues. The Bundesliga – which returned earlier this month – have experienced no such issues with fans respecting social distancing regulations and staying away from stadiums.

Sports / Dortmund’s Favre backtracks on exit talks by Israel : yesterday at 11:43 pm
Swiss coach Lucien Favre on Wednesday back-tracked on comments he made hinting he would leave Borussia Dortmund at the end of the season after defeat by Bayern Munich left his team seven points adrift of the champions in the Bundesliga title race with six games left.

“I am not thinking of giving up at all,” Favre, who is under contract until 2021, insisted on Wednesday.

“Yesterday, we were all disappointed, but my words in the interview directly after the game seem to have been misunderstood in many cases,” with several German media outlets speculating about his future.

Favre’s attitude was very different to his crestfallen demeanour immediately after Tuesday’s 1-0 home loss to Bayern, thanks to Joshua Kimmich’s deft chip just before half-time.

The defeat came on the back of a 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Bayern last November at Munich’s Allianz Arena.

On Tuesday night, Favre gave a rueful grin when asked if the latest defeat proved he does not have what it takes to lead Dortmund to break Bayern’s monopoly on the German league.

“That’s been said here for months,” Favre had said.

“I know how these things go and I will talk about it in a few weeks.

“I’m staying calm and I trust in myself.”

On Wednesday, Dortmund sports director Michael Zorc told broadcaster Sport1 that the club’s senior bosses “are certainly not having a debate” about whether Favre should stay.

Zorc conceded that Favre “must have expressed himself in a misleading fashion immediately after the match”, but insisted the ambiguities had now been explained “very clearly”.

For the second season running under Favre, 62, second-placed Dortmund find themselves wanting at the tail end of the campaign with Bayern now firmly on course for an eighth straight league title.

According to German daily Bild on Wednesday, Dortmund’s bosses made contact “in the past few months” with Niko Kovac, who was sacked by Bayern in November, as a possible successor to Favre.

After Favre hinted that he may leave, Germany and Bayern legend and Sky pundit Lothar Matthaeus commented: “as soon as I heard that, I thought ‘Favre will leave and Kovac will come’.”

On Wednesday, Favre responded by telling Bild he found Matthaeus’ suggestion “incredible and not acceptable for me”.

“I am happy in Dortmund, I have a contract until 2021 and I definitely want to be on the bench next season,” Favre added.

Bild also says that RB Leipzig coach Julian Nagelsmann is Dortmund’s ideal candidate, but the 32-year-old is under contract until 2023.

Favre has, however, all but waved the white flag on bridging the gap in the table, even though Bayern must still face Borussia Moenchengladbach and Bayer Leverkusen, who have already both beaten them this season.

“It’s going to be difficult – seven points (to make up) in six games, that is brutally hard,” said Favre after Tuesday’s defeat to Bayern.

The Swiss fell offside with Dortmund fans last season when he conceded the 2018-19 title race was “over” after a 4-2 home loss to Schalke left them three points behind Bayern with three games left.

Politics / ‘PDP behind our crisis’ —Osun APC by Israel : yesterday at 11:40 pm
The All progressives Congress (APC) in the state of Osun has disclosed that the Peoples Democratic Party was behind the purported crisis in the party

This is as the party affirmed that prince Adegboyega Famoodun remains the state Chairman of the party, as there is no crack in the party neither was a petition written to remove the state Chairman.

The state APC legal adviser, Barrister Adegoke Ogunsola made this known on Thursday, at the State Secretariat of the party, during a press conference organized by the State Executive Council members.

Ogunsola said that “There is unity in Osun APC and there is no faction, noting that some people suspected to be disgruntled members of the main opposition, PDP, are misleading the public with lies, misinformation, and falsehood to believe that Osun APC is factionalized and not united”.

According to him, “Osun APC always operates within the ambit of the party’s constitution, other relevant laws, and directives from the National Headquarters of the party.

“We are hereby informing the public that the news that Osun APC is factionalized into both Gov. Gboyega Oyetola’s camp and Rauf Aregbesola’s camp, is an utter falsehood and misinformation from the pit of hell and those wishing disintegration of Osun APC are members of the main opposition”.

The party said, “It is a shame that the former governor, Ogbeni Aregbesola is sponsoring the Secretary of the party, Alhaji Razaq Salinsile against the State Chairman, Prince Adegboyega Famodun, the duo has a cordial relationship, and we are endowed with resourceful elders such as Chief Bisi Akande, Chief Sola Akinwumi and many others who will intervene and settle any dispute if there is any”.

World-News / United States President, Trump, Signs Executive Order Regulating Social Media Af by Oliviajoseph: yesterday at 11:36 pm
Speaking from the Oval Office ahead of signing the order, Trump accused Twitter of acting as an editor “with a viewpoint” and described the platform’s fact-check of his tweets as “political activism”.

President Donald Trump of the United States on Thursday signed an executive order seeking to limit the broad legal protection that federal law currently provides to social-media and other online platforms.
This is coming days after Twitter called two of his tweets "potentially misleading".
Speaking from the Oval Office ahead of signing the order, Trump accused Twitter of acting as an editor “with a viewpoint” and described the platform’s fact-check of his tweets as “political activism”.
He said he would delete his Twitter account “in a heartbeat”

He said, “We’re here today to defend free speech from one of the greatest dangers.
"A small handful of social media monopolies controls a vast portion of all public and private communications in the United States.
"They've had unchecked power to censor, restrict, edit, shape, hide, alter, virtually any form of communication between private citizens and large public audiences."
Trump said that if his lawyers could find a way to legally shut down Twitter, “I would do it.”

The order escalates an already heated fight over how big social-media platforms handle politically charged content.
The companies long resisted stronger moderation efforts and have struggled to address growing pressure to combat the proliferation of misinformation and other problematic content in a way that avoids fueling criticism that they are inconsistent, biased or stifling free expression.
The executive order marks the Trump administration’s most aggressive effort against social-media companies.
The President has threatened for years to counteract what he and many conservatives see as a systemic bias against their political positions on social media.
His campaign on Thursday sent supporters an email seeking to raise money off the President’s feud with Twitter.

Politics / Buhari auctioning Nigeria with foreign loans ― PDP by Israel : yesterday at 11:36 pm
The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has said the country has been placed on the international market by President Muhammadu Buhari owing to accumulated foreign loans incurred by the All Progressives Congress, APC-led government in the past five years.

The party said President Buhari’s moves to take a fresh $5.513 billion (N2.1 trillion) loan in addition to an earlier $22.79 billion (N8.5trillion), “the size of 2020 budget, without operable repayment plans, will totally compromise the fiscal integrity of our nation and open her up for economic annexation by foreign creditors.”

While adding that the N850 billion loan from the capital market was already worrisome, the PDP noted that the federal government “in this fiscal year, cannot muster the capacity to harness the huge resources available in our country to generate even half of the sum of its own budget, but has been going cap in hands to shop for foreign loans.”

A statement issued by the spokesman of the party, Kola Ologbondiyan read: “The PDP expresses fears that with this situation, the APC administration is practically driving our nation to the brinks while exposing Nigerians to the risk of modern-day slavery by mortgaging our future to economic appropriation by foreign interests.”

The statement continued: “Already the situation has created apprehensions, anxiety, and trepidation among the citizens, particularly the youths, who are now scared about their future and the survival of our nation under the APC.

“It is even more distressing that this administration cannot account for the loans it has taken so far. In spite of the deluge of loans, the lives of the ordinary Nigerians, on whose behalf they claim to be amassing these debts, have become worse than the APC, and Buhari met them in 2015.

“Painfully, even the savings made by previous administrations have been opened up for pillaging by APC leaders and the cabal in the Buhari Presidency

“The PDP calls on Nigerians to look beyond our primordial differences and unite in speaking against this accumulation of debts. It is no longer about political party affiliations, creed, ethnicity, class or age. We all must unite in one voice to save our nation from an imminent collapse.

“Our party holds that rather than mortgaging our nation to foreign interests, President Buhari should immediately cut the size of his government, slash its over-bloated budget, clip its luxuries, curb unbridled corruption in his administration and make haste to recover the N14 trillion that was stolen by APC leaders under his watch.

“If the N14 trillion stashed away by APC leaders and the cabal is recovered, our nation will not be in need of these humongous foreign loans.

“The PDP also urges the National Assembly to stand on the side of the people and save the nation by immediately using its legislative instrument to check this unbridled appetite for foreign loans.”
